Dr. S. Balasivanandha Prabu is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Anna University, Chennai, and currently serves as the Director of the Centre for Sponsored Research and Consultancy. He has played pivotal administrative roles within the university, notably as Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 2021 to 2025. During his tenure, he significantly enhanced the department’s academic stature, contributing to improved international rankings through strengthened research output, quality, and industry engagement. Dr. Prabu led the implementation of strategic initiatives focused on advancing teaching methodologies such as outcome-based education and curriculum modernization. Additionally, he revitalized alumni relations to foster industry mentorships and career opportunities for students. Prior to this, he served as Head of the Central Workshop Division (2015–2019), where he modernized laboratory infrastructure and promoted experiential learning. He also held the position of Deputy Director of the Centre for Academic Courses (2010–2014), managing academic scheduling and curriculum updates for university departments and affiliated institutions.

Dr. Prabu’s primary research interests encompass composite materials, ultrafine-grained and nanostructured materials, and the development of cutting tools. He has authored over 160 research papers published in reputed international journals and conferences and contributed six book chapters on topics including nanotechnology, Al–Li alloys, and severe plastic deformation. He is the Co-author of the book Superplasticity, published by Springer Nature. His innovative research has resulted in two granted Indian patents, with an additional patent application in cutting tool materials. Funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), he has successfully completed three sponsored research projects, underscoring his research leadership and expertise. Presently, he has one one ongoing major project his scholarly contributions have earned him recognition, with a H-index of 25 and a citation count of 3100 as of July2025.

In addition to academic and research excellence, Dr. Prabu has actively fostered industry-academia collaborations. Notably, he established a partnership with 5G Technologies India (P) Ltd., Chennai, formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement to support a PhD candidate under the Prime Minister’s Fellowship Program. Through this MOA, he has developed a method to predict the remnant life of the Industrial components subjected to extreme condition. He has supported twelve innovative student projects through the Centre for Sponsored Research and Consultancy (CSRC). Dr. Prabu has also contributed extensively to the organization of major international conferences at Anna University, serving in leadership roles including Assistant Organizing Secretary for AMPC 2006, Organizing Secretary for AMPC 2013, Co-coordinator for ICMDM 2016, Chair of the Materials, Design, and Manufacturing Process conference in 2023, and Co-Patron of the International Vacuum Insulation Symposium (IVIS) 2023. His academic contributions include organizing nine workshops, acting as a PhD examiner for various international universities, and supervising 45 postgraduate and 47 undergraduate theses.

Dr. Prabu has guided 15 PhD scholars to completion and continues to mentor doctoral candidates. His academic influence extends globally through over 80 invited lectures and five keynote presentations at prestigious international forums. His outstanding research contributions have been recognized by Anna University with multiple honours, including the Distinguished Researcher Award, the Best Innovation Award, and the Research Excellence Award.

Committed to global academic exchange, Dr. Prabu has actively participated in international forums and research collaborations. He attended the American-Canadian Conference for Academic Disciplines at Ryerson University, Toronto (2014), conducted collaborative research at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (2014), and presented at the ASME Conferences in Houston (2015) and Salt Lake City (2019). He also presented at ICTP2017 at the University of Cambridge and participated in the Erasmus+ International Mobility Programme at the University of Edinburgh (2018). Furthermore, Dr. Prabu has established a key collaborative research initiative with the Mechanical Engineering Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, contributing to an Indo-Russian joint project aimed at advancing research in advanced materials and manufacturing technologies. This collaboration strengthens his international research network and furthers bilateral academic relations. Most recently, he presented at the 34th International Conference on Diamond and Carbon Materials in Dresden, Germany (2024), highlighting his sustained commitment to advancing research and fostering international academic partnerships.
