Student Innovative Project (SIP)


Student Innovative Projects are funded under Research Support Scheme of CSRC, Anna University for the students of University Departments / Centres / Institutes, Constituent Colleges and its Regional Centres. In this scheme, the innovative ideas are nurtured by providing funds to the tune of maximum amount of Rs.25,000/- per team to conduct the research work to develop a prototype product during the academic year.

Anna University is committed to strengthen its “Research Innovation Ecosystem”. One of the key elements in a vibrant research innovation ecosystem rests in the efficiency of interconnections of resources and competencies and strength of internal relations. The centre facilitates the internal users in all stages from formulation to completion of all project, consultancy, testing, training related activities. The major responsibilities of CSRC are as follows below:

Eligibility Norms

Condition 1:

Any Full time UG Student in 5th Semester or 7th Semester of University Departments / Centres / Institutes, Regional campuses and Constituent colleges are eligible to apply.

Condition 2:

A group of students (minimum 2 or maximum 3) need to apply.

Condition 3:

The student group shall apply under the mentorship of one regular Faculty member only in the University Departments / Centres / Institutes, Regional campuses and Constituent colleges.

Condition 4:

Preference will be given to interdisciplinary innovative projects (Students coming from different branches with multidisciplinary ideas). In such cases, two mentors (regular faculty members) are permitted.

How to apply

The research proposal shall be submitted through the CSRC online portal. The PDF file generated after the successful submission of the proposal has to be signed by the students, mentor and submitted to CTDT duly forwarded by the respective Head of the Departments / Director of the Centre / Institute.

The proposal shall contain the objectives, research methodology, expected deliverables and budget. The maximum amount that could be sanctioned shall be Rs. 25,000/- per project. The duration shall be a maximum of six months period.

The funds shall be utilized for the following purpose (Fabrication / purchase of instruments / units / equipments / components / spares, Travel by students, fees for conference registration (only for Paper presentation of this project in seminars / conferences - title of this project should be mentioned in registration fee receipt), Consumables, Contingencies)

The outcome of the project should be an innovative prototype / product / model / component / system / process. A paper presentation by the students in a national or international conference and in the department societies / associations is desirable. The CSRC, Anna University should be acknowledged in all related publications.

If any patent / technology transfer is emerging from this project, for commercialization / obtaining patent / technology transfer to industry, the office of CSRC shall assist and compensate for the same as per the guidelines of CSRC.

Frequently asked questions related to Student Innovative Projects

  • Deliverables of the project

    The outcome of the project should be an innovative prototype / product / model / component / system / process. If any patent / technology transfer is emerging from this project, for commercialization / obtaining patent / technology transfer to industry, the office of CSRC shall assist and compensate for the same as per the guidelines of CSRC. A paper presentation by the students in a national or international conference and in the department societies / associations is desirable.

  • The screening of the projects will be done by the Expert Committee. The students will present their proposals before the committee through PPT alongwith the mentor. Administrative sanction will be issued by CSRC for the selected projects.

  • The Head of the Department / Director of the Centre / Institution / Dean of the Regional Campuses / Constituent Colleges has to ensure that all the bills are in order; the items purchased in the Research Support Scheme (RSS) are in the stock of the Department. The accounts related to the students project shall be settled by the Mentor within the end date. iii) The Head of the Department / Director of the Centre / Institution / Dean of the Regional Campuses / Constituent Colleges shall ensure that the account the students projects is settled and all facilities created and equipments made under the student projects are handed over to the Department before No Dues certificate is issued to the students.

  • Any Intellectual Property Rights arising out of the project will be jointly owned by the University and the Inventor. In the case of student projects, the inventor shall be the Mentor and the students. The guidelines for Consultancy and sponsored research projects of CSRC with regard to Patent, Technology Transfer shall hold good for this RSS - SIP.
    If any patent / technology transfer is emerging from this project for commercialization / obtaining patent / technology transfer to industry, the office of CSRC shall assist and compensate for the same as per the guidelines of CSRC.

  • After the successful completion of the students research project, the students and the Mentor will receive an appreciation certificate. Every year the projects completed by the students will be reviewed by a Committee. The best projects will receive cash prize and certificate.

  • In case the Mentor or students after taking up the SIP are not able to execute it, the Mentor shall return the entire fund with interest or the unutilized fund to CSRC with the written consent of all concerned – students, mentor and HOD, Dean.
    The purchases made shall be handed over to the Department / Centre / Institutes. In the case the Mentor leaves the University either during the duration of the project or after completing the same successfully, the accounts need to be settled to CSRC, the facilities and equipment made in the project to be handed over to the Department / Centre / Institute before No-Dues is issued by the Department / Centre / Institute to the Faculty member.
    At the end of the project period, in case the students project has not completed with all the deliverables, a review committee constituted by the CSRC and will evaluate the project to recommend the recovery of the amount sanctioned in full / part / nil.
